How the Final Schedule Was Decided

The program was determined on the day of the event by the actual attendees. To jump start the conversation about what should be covered at Library Camp NYC, attendees (and anyone else) added their suggestions for topics for discussion on the Discussion Topics page. On the day of the event, attendees were given a copy of this early list of suggestions not as a guide for what we should be discussing but to inspire them as they decided what we should talk about on that day. Anyone who wanted to suggest a topic at the meeting also had to agree to serve as the moderator for that discussion session. We received about 32 suggestions (here's the original list) some of which were then merged together as they seemed to be related and we only had space for 24 sessions. The list was then projected on a screen for all the attendees to see. After further negotiation, some sessions were merged. Next, Stephen Francoeur read off each topic and asked attendees to raise their hands if they thought they might attend that session. Based on these rough estimates of attendance, rooms were assigned for each session.

The organizers of the event (Steven Kaye, Rachel Watstein, and Stephen Francoeur) had hoped that the process of calling for discussion topics and assigning suggestions to breakout rooms on the program grid would take about 30-40 minutes. Instead, it took 60 minutes and cut into the time alloted for the first set of discussion sessions.
