For hotels in Manhattan proper, attendees should probably plan on spending about $200/night. Business-class hotels tend to offer cheaper rates on weekends, tourist and luxury-class hotels tend to offer higher rates on weekends (for those people that want to come up over the weekend and see the sights before the conference on Tuesday). Keep in mind that August is tourist season, so you'll want to book soon. Check to see if any organizations you belong to (AAA, AARP, ALA, etc.) offer additional discounts. Manhattan does have Comfort Inns, Holiday Inns, Ramada Inns, etc. in addition to the Hiltons and Hyatts and so on. Consider sharing rooms with other attendees - feel free to post to this page if you're looking for roommates (see below).
